An Interview with the Restock Team
A few months back a friend got in touch and we discussed a project that she and her husband had been working on entitled, Restock. I listened intently and was immediately sold on the concept. I was privileged enough to help out with some coverage on their last event and even had the opportunity to attend. The atmosphere was great and I to walked away with some much needed sneaker cleaning products.
For those still not sure what the event is all about read on.
What is restock?
Restock is a concept driven by locals who love discovering and supporting local brands. Hosted by Plain Flavoured, a Cape Town brand crafted in Mitchells Plain; as brand creators, we express our love for sneakers, sneaker culture and street wear through sneaker related art, products, apparel and events. With a strong focus on not forgetting our roots, this brand is proud of our Mitchells Plain flavour. Restock is a lifestyle event that we host, passionate about showcasing sneaker culture, locally produced street style brands and talented Cape Town entrepreneurs.
What was the inspiration behind the event?
As self-proclaimed sneakerheads, we wanted to create a space for other sneaker and sneaker culture enthusiasts to showcase their grails or their beaters; shop for dope clothing and accessories; learn how to care for their favourites; trade well-loved kicks or even just chill with a buddy and talk about latest trends or releases. Restock is for the culture. Once we started planning this we also realised that we needed a space to reach our brand, Plain Flavoured’s, target market and noticed more local startups needing the same.
Why was there a need to do an event of this calibre?
The need for this event came about when we, as a start-up brand, needed a space to reach and grow our target market. We started with the idea of only being an online brand but there are still many South Africans who either do not trust the process, and understandably so in the current context, or would just prefer to feel the products and try them on etc before purchasing. Our vision is to create an event where local start-ups can showcase their brands, reach their target market in one venue and encourage Cape Town to buy locally sourced and produced items.
What was the reception like on your last event, was it what you guys expected?
Our events in March and June 2018, saw locals engaging with brands and enjoying the offering so much that we’ve decided to bring it back – bigger and better! Guests/attendees have expressed that their love for the access to the variety of local brands we have on offer and very much enjoying the atmosphere which is a relaxed vibe where people can chill, have a drink and something to eat, shop local items and learn about brands and products through live demonstrations as well. We have seen a steady growth in both vendors and guest and we look forward to similar, if not better growth for the next event.
What can people expect from your next event?
This time around we’ve chosen a theme and bring you restock: heritage edition on 29 September 2018. With this event we’re aiming to have conversations, learn about and celebrate our heritage, whatever that may mean to you. We want to encourage conversations, a sense of nostalgia and, ultimately, pride around our heritage as people of Cape Town. Live entertainment including live graffiti installation by local artist, Fersyndicate and hip-hop demonstrations by Heal the Hood Project, an NPO started by Emile Jansen of Black Noise. We also have our resident DJ playing a dope tracks and an old school arcade area which means guests will have an experience linking them to many aspects of their heritage.
We once again have a variety of local brands on offer, many returning vendors and new ones as well. People can expect and should come prepared to SHOP LOCAL! Think apparel, accessories, sneaker cleaning products, merchandise, art, cakes and treats (which have some exciting twists!) and so much more! There’s even an opportunity to get an affordable tattoo! It’s going to be an entertaining, chilled and fun day out for the whole family! Our ticket prices encourage a ‘the more the merrier’ vibe as we give you discounts for being a couple or a squad! So, grab the friends and come check it out!
